Heart Sandwich Cookies are a sweet way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Cut-out sugar cookie dough is tinted red and baked into buttery sugar cookie hearts. Spread a layer of fluffy vanilla buttercream between two heart cookies and roll them in sprinkles for a perfect Valentine’s Day treat. These quick and easy Valentine’s Day Heart Sandwich Cookies are worthy of a special occasion!

Sweet Valentine Treats

We can’t think of a more perfect way to spread some love than with these irresistible heart-shaped sandwich cookies. Bring a batch to your kid’s class party, serve them after school, or set them out as an after-dinner treat. The cookies can even be made and decorated ahead of time.

To start, you’ll need a large GoodCook Mixing Bowl or stand mixer. The egg, butter, and sugar are beaten until fluffy, and the flour and vanilla are added in at the end to form the dough. The dough is then separated into 3 small rounds and tinted red with food coloring.

For the next step, each dough ball is rolled between two pieces of Sweet Creations Natural Parchment paper with a GoodCook Classic Wooden Rolling Pin. Cut out heart shapes with a Sweet Creations heart cookie cutter. Line a GoodCook 11×17” Baking Sheet with Sweet Creations Natural Parchment paper and bake the hearts. The cookies can be made several days ahead of time and stored in an airtight container before frosting.

For The Frosting: Whip softened butter with electric beaters or in a stand-up mixer, adding vanilla in at the end. Start adding in powdered sugar one cup at a time. Adjust the sweetness to your liking, adding more powdered sugar by the cup if it’s not sweet enough. For a silky smooth texture, add milk, one teaspoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.

For Decorating: Spread frosting on top of one heart cookie with a GoodCook Touch Spatula Spreader. Top with another heart cookie. Roll the edges in sprinkles—it should stick to the frosting between the cookies.

How to Make Heart-Shaped Sandwich Cookies

Perfect Cutout Sugar Cookies

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened but not melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • Pink, red and purple food coloring

Our Favorite Vanilla Buttercream

  • 2 sticks (1 cup) salted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 lbs cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4-1/3 cup milk


  • Nonpareils Valentine Sprinkles


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 

In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together egg, butter, and sugar until very well combined. Add flour and vanilla, mix until a thick dough forms. Separate dough into 3 small rounds and tint with food coloring, kneading until the color is well mixed.

Roll dough between two pieces of parchment paper until 1/4” thick. Cut into hearts with Sweet Creations heart cookie cutters. Transfer cut cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 8-11 minutes, or just until edges begin to brown.

Assemble into sandwich cookies with Our Favorite Buttercream Frosting, roll edges into nonpariels sprinkles.
