Trying to mix things up with some of our easy weeknight meals, I threw together this really simple 5 Ingredient Basil Chicken and Pasta. It was fresh, tasty, the kids liked it, and best of all…easy to make.
So, let me tell you how to make it. You’ll begin with about a pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts. With cutting board to protect your counter, like the 10×15″ Good Cook Touch Plastic Cutting Board, and a sharp knife for cutting, cut each chicken breast in half. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
In a deep sided skillet, like the Good Cook 11″ Saute Pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the seasoned chicken and brown them on each side. You want to get a nice, golden brown crust to develop the flavors.
While you’re working on the chicken you can cook your favorite pasta. I picked farfalle, but any shape will do. After the chicken is browned an cooked through, you’ll set it aside to rest for a minute while you combine a little more butter and some half and half.
It might sound pretty simple so far, and it is supposed to be, but after you prep the creamy sauce and stir in the cooked pasta, you’ll add a whole bunch of fresh basil which will really give you a punch of flavor (and color.)
You can easily dress up this recipe by adding other vegetables, some parmesan cheese, or extra seasonings to the pasta, but sometimes simple is just as good.
If, however, you feel like adding a few extras to this recipe, I think a little lemon zest and some grape tomatoes taste really awesome in this basic creamy basil sauce. They’ll keep the flavors light and fresh.

This 5 Ingredient Basil Chicken and Pasta comes together quickly for a simple weeknight dinner. Serve with a simple green salad or steamed broccoli for an easy side and a complete meal.
- 4 Tbsp butter, divided
- 1lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in half
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 cups half and half
- 1 pound pasta, cooked according to package instructions
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large nonstick pan or cast iron skillet over medium heat. Season the chicken with the garlic powder, onion powder, Italian Seasoning, salt and pepper. Add the seasoned chicken to the melted butter and cook until browned and cooked through, about 4 - 5 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and set aside on a plate. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the same pan you cooked the chicken in and melt over medium heat. Then, add the half and half, and stir with a wire whisk until combined. Allow to simmer for about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the pasta and the basil, reserving 1 tablespoon of basil for garnish. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Return the chicken to the pan, placing it on top of the pasta and lightly spooning some of the sauce over the tops. Sprinkle with reserved basil and serve.
